Proposed Housing Development, Beadnell, Northumberland

Wardell Armstrong was commissioned to undertake a Landscape and Visual Appraisal and develop a Landscape Masterplan for this site which is located to the west of the popular seaside village of Beadnell, Northumberland in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The proposal was for the construction of approximately 45 dwellings and an associated access road. The sensitivity of the area required careful analysis for the landscape and visual context as well as considering the location of future housing. Representative viewpoints were identified and agreed with the local planning authority. From this it was possible to develop a landscape masterplan that sought to integrate the proposed housing whilst retaining important heritage and archaeological features within the site.

The landscape proposals included the introduction of wildflower meadows, tree plantations and amenity green spaces. A surface water strategy was developed to address flooding issues. By careful design it was possible to create a development that respected its relationship with the existing village and the open countryside to the west.
