North Uist Primary School, Outer Hebrides

This community led new build primary school project is the concentration of three existing local primary schools. The new facilities include Sports Scotland standard pitches and sports facilities, a large community centre and 100 role primary school. Wardell Armstrong have designed the landscape within this unique and sensitive location in the Outer Hebrides focussing on high quality outdoor classrooms and interactive play features. Our approach during the Value Engineering process with the contractor was to reassess the school entrance area that included a complex step/ ramp detail. Through an innovative design process we designed out the need for the steps creating a flush arrival plaza space that is subsequently more cost effective, compliant to standards, more accessible and safer for the end users. This resulted in the landscape works being within budget at pre-construction stage.

Health and safety is integral to the practice’s design approach with all projects subject to a task risk assessment which is reviewed and monitored throughout the project stages. We comply with all aspects of the CDM Regulations and our designers specifically aim to identify and remove risks. This is evidenced in the plaza design. We also worked closely with the CDM-Co-ordinator.
