International Women in Engineering Day – Sara Aliamiri, Senior Structural Engineer

Sara Aliamiri joined Wardell Armstrong last year and works in our London office as a Senior Structural Engineer. For International Women in Engineering Day 2017, Sara gives a brief career history to date, as well as a project overview on a project that she has been working on since joining Wardell Armstrong.

I joined Wardell Armstrong in 2016. I have obtained my doctorate degree in structural engineering from Loughborough University in 2013.

Since I joined Wardell Armstrong, initially I worked on the refurbishment of a residential block comprising of concrete flat slabs with external masonry walls located at Battersea, London. The project involved the addition of a new roof extension to create an additional four apartments with approximately 250m2 area including staircases and external walls. An assessment of the overall stability of the structure was carried out followed by the production of tender drawings and attending meetings with the Architects, Contractor and the Clients. The proposed new roof extension composed of a series of 12 portal frames and other associated steel members to carry the loads to the existing columns and to deal with the stability.

I am currently working on the refurbishment and vertical extension of an existing radio station located at Battersea, London. The existing structure comprises of concrete precast units and load bearing walls along with steel beams and columns. The project involves conversion of the building to a commercial block of offices and is composed of addition of side and front extensions to the building as well as extra two office floor levels. The proposed scheme will deliver 1790m2 of lettable office spaces. As part of my involvement I worked on the feasibility study and assessment of the existing foundations and structural elements. I am currently working on the detailed analysis and design of the new proposed structural scheme.

I have also been involved with the feasibility study of an in situ concrete framed residential building located in East Croydon.

In addition, I have been involved with the underground drainage and ground engineering aspects of a number of projects proposed by Croydon Council for planning up to RIBA stage 2. These construction projects range from traditional masonry structure to concrete/steel framed structures. As part of my work with these projects I have attended meetings with the client and other members of the design team.

I am very enthusiastic about my job as a structural engineer and I enjoy being part of the structural team. I believe that in every job, regardless of the scope and scale, there are always things to learn, broaden your own knowledge and gain experience.
