Housing development, Burtree Lane, Darlington

Wardell Armstrong was appointed to undertake work on a site north of Darlington. The work consisted of a Landscape and Visual Appraisal, Preliminary Landscape Design, Tree Survey and Air Quality Assessment. The site of a 17ha site will include 380 individual dwellings with land reserved for a primary school and nursery.

A major constraint to the site development was the overhead electricity transmission lines that cross the site. This reservation influenced the location of the development cells and contributed to the strong green infrastructure.

Opportunities were created to enhance the biodiversity by strengthening woodland areas to improve connection between the nature reserve to the south and the open countryside to the north.
