Gabalfa School and Ysgol Glan Ceubal Redevelopment

Wardell Armstrong were engaged by Cardiff Council via the National Procurement Service (NPS) Framework initially to provide landscape design and then multi-disciplinary support for a planning application for the redevelopment of the current school site. As part of the Council (and Welsh Government) 21st Century Schools initiative, the separate English and Welsh medium schools are to be incorporated into one purpose-build facility. To inform the progress of the design, Wardell Armstrong were asked to provide landscape architect, ecology, noise and soils assessment inputs to the development team. As a major development scheme, it is a national requirement in Wales to consult on draft proposals and to consider all responses prior to submission of a planning application. Wardell Armstrong’s planning team in Cardiff provided advice in respect of this process and produced a summary report to accompany the planning application which was submitted in late November 2016. Widespread endorsement of the proposals by consultees at pre-application consultation was replicated during the determination process, and the application was unanimously approved by planning committee within 8 weeks, substantially ahead of the project programme target.
