Canal stop gates - Bridgewater Canal Company

Wardell Armstrong LLP were commissioned by the Bridgewater Canal Company to design and oversee the construction of 2 sets of canal stop gates.

As a result of coal mining subsidence, this section of the Bridgewater Canal has been raised above the surrounding land. This has resulted in a large volume of water retained above ground level and therefore, requires increased levels of maintenance.

Wardell Armstrong LLP have undertaken a multidisciplinary service to enable the design and construction of the gates. These services included an ecological survey, topographical survey and ground investigation to inform the detailed design. Designs were completed by Wardell Armstrong LLP for the access track, sheet piles, capping beams and base slab. Following the detailed design, contract preparation, tender supervision and appraisals were completed before construction supervision and contract management of NEC Option A for the stop gates works.

The main contractor for the works was Harry Fairclough Construction Ltd and the oak gates were manufactured and installed by CTS Bridges Ltd.
